Herald--17 October 18597. Slave 3124, 15 Feb 1860 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
Sugar and Molasses direct from Liberia--Charles Cooper, colored, who left here in 1856 (says the Portsmouth Transcript) is now in Liberia growing coffee and sugar, is doing a thriving business, it is said. The few days since, there arrived here two tierces of sugar and two tierces of molasses, direct from his plantation, consigned to one of our High Street merchants, Mr. John Neaville. We have a speciment of the sugar, which has a good body, clear color, and is withal a very fair article. We presume that the acquaintances of "Charles," hereabouts, willhold these articles at a premium, and vie with each other in efforts to drink the first coffee which is syrupized with this product of their former "chum."
He owned a slave who died.8. Slave 3125, death & funeral of slave, "Uncle Dick", 29 Feb 1860 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
B. M. Richard, died 15 February 1860 of heart disease at age 56. He was born in Portsmouth. He was a slave of John C. Neville. Information provided by John C. Neaville for the death register.
Argus--29 February 18609. Occupation 3126, grocer, 1866 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
Old Dick's Funeral--One of the most numerously attended funerals we have witnessed for many years past, occurred Monday. It was that of a slave belonging to Mr. John Neaville, familiarly known as "Uncle Dick" by our people. He was, a score years preceding his death, employed about the store of his master, and by fidelity and honesty, mingled with great politeness, had won a position in the community of which any man might feel proud. His master always felt that his interests were safe in his hands, and though he was permitted free access to the money-drawer, as salesman, in no instance or any circumstance, with the amplest opportunities, did his account current exhibit error.
The tribute to his worth was such as he merited. His death occurred suddenly last Sunday morning, he was shrouded with a black cloth suit, placed in a mahogany coffin, and buried Monday. His master's store was closed, the entire family and a number of our citizens, with perhaps 1,000 or 1,500 colored people followed his remains to the city of the dead, and every one in that large company felt that an upright, honest, sincere Christian man had departed this life to put on immortality.

The "Rads" in Council--Scramble for the Spoils--Our conservative citizens positively declingin to hold any public meeting, for the purpose of taking action in accordance with the provisions of the circular letter, addressed to mayor by the military commission at Norfolk, the great roaring, rhinocerous radical element, composed of a few whites, leading many blacks by the nose, assembled at Zion (African) church on Friday night, and amid much tumult and excitemtn, arranged a large array of recommendations to the military appointment board, filling the various municipal offices.
The scene at the church, described as "rich, rare and racy," as the scramble among the "friends and brothers" for official distinction, were indescribably ridiculous. "Wooly heads" had to stand back off the official platform; but their mutterings of discontent were loud and deep. The Babel-like confusion attendant on the proceedings, and would have done infinite honor to the lower house of Congress...
Mr. E. B. Larkins, a commanding general among the newly created electors of the people, was brought prominently before the meeting, and an applicant for official honors and emoluments, and his constituents unanimously recommended him to the meeting, as worthy of filling any position to which he might be appointed....
The meeting was called to order by Thomas Brown, and on motion, John W. Brownley was called to the chair, and Benjamin A. Johnson appointed secretary.
After remarks explanatory of the object of the meeting, on motion, the chair appointed E. B. Lookins, Isaiah Wilkins, Severn Wilkins, George Teamer, E. P. Whipple, Samuel Hamme, and Joseph Booth, a committee of nominations, and after suitable retiracy and conference, the following recommendations were reported.............
