Matthew James Matthews---The funeral service of Matthew James Matthews, whose death occurred last Friday in his home at 1612 Prentis Avenue, Prentis Place, will take place there tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.20. Funeral 2988, 31 Jan 1909 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
Later in the day interment will take place in Oak Grove cemetery.
Matthew J. Mathews--The funeral of Mathew J. Mathews whose death occureed last week, took place at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in his late residence, 1512 Prentis Avenue, Prentis Place, and was largely attended.
Rev. A. C. Bledsoe, pastor of Owens Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Edward S. Pierce, pastor of the Prentis Place Baptist church.
The Chambers fire company No. 2 of which Mr. Mathews was a member, attended the service in a body with a band.
At the conclusion of the service the body was conveyed to Oak Grove cemetery, where interment took place.
The pall bearers were: C. S. Minter, William D. Monter, alexander O. Runaldue, Robert W. Murden, David Appenzeller and Washington Hall.

Portsmouth--Mathew Stewart Mathews, 80, of 517 Patrick St., vice president of the Circle Restaurant and one of its founders, died Wednesday in a hospital.
A native of Portsmouth, he was the husband of Mrs. Jessie P. Mathews.
He was a member of Park View United Methodist Church and its Board of Trustees.
Long active in fraternal and civic activites, he was a 55-year Mason and member of Naval Masonic Lodge 100. He was a charter member of Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, member of Khedive Shrine Temple and its Century Club, Meriam Eastern Star Chapter 94, Portsmouth Rotary Club, Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club, and Bide-A-Wee Golf Club.
Besides his widow, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harry L. Hopewell, and a son, M. Stewart Mathews, Jr., both of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in Snellings Funeral Home by the Rev. William Taylor and the Rev. Harry Craver. Burial, with Masonic rites, will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.
