Mr. Mathews was the son of the late M. Stewart and Jessie Pedigo Mathews. A lifelong resident of Portsmouth, he graduated from Wilson High School and worked for the Old Dominion Tobacco Co. before entering the Army prior to Pearl Harbor. Mr. Mathews rose to the rank of first lieutenant and earned two Bronze Stars for heroism while serving with Patton's 3rd Army. After World War II, Mr. Mathews, along with his father and brother-in-law, Harry Hopewell founded The Circle Restaurant in Portsmouth. Over the next 40 years, the Circle bacame a Portsmouth landmark, known as one of Tidewater's finest restaurants. He knew his customers by name and everyone in Portsmouth knew "Stewart." A few years after retiring from the Circle, he returned to the restaurant business and opened "Rodman's Bones and Buddy's Restaurant. Mr. Mathews was an avid golfer, a life master bridge player, a 50-year member of Washington-Lafayette Lodge No. 176, AF & AM, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons Port Norfolk No. 36 and Khedive Shrine Temple.
The widower of Peggy Silber Mathews, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 26 years, Isabel; his sons, Mathew S. Mathews III and wife Tina of Poolesville, Md., Richard E. Mathews and wife Charlie of Chesapeake, Reed S. Mathews and wife Annie of Lincolnville, Maine; his daughter, Linden Ross Mathews-Boone and husband Jim Boone of Wilmington, N.C.; his sons, Keith D. Mathews and wife Nicki Nixon of Virginia Beach and Craig D. Mathews of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte M. Hopewell of Newport News; and numerous nieces, nephews, borthers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. James D. Thomas. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Dept. of the Blind/Lib. & Resource Center, 395 Azalea Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227 or a local charity.

A man by the name of Overton Mathews was shot yesterday, in the open day, by a negro. He and another man, by the name of Davis, were riding together in a buggy on the Canal (bank), not far from the Lake Drummond hotel, when a suspicious looking negro were seen to approach, upon which he suggested to his companion that for the sake of safety they had better get out of the vehicle. So soon as they had done so, another negro approached from a different direction, armed with a double-barrel gun, and without saying a word, fired upon Mathews, wounding his so severaly in the upper part of his leg, that it is thought it will have to be amputated. The wounded man is somewhat notorious for his hatred, and, as they say, cruelty to the colored race.
