James E. Sparkman, 83, a former resident of Linden Avenue, died yesterday at 3:30 p.m. at the home of a niece, Mrs. Phillip C. Taylor, of 128 North Armstrong Street, after an illness of 11 months.8. Funeral Home 1562, Snellings Funeral Home, Jul 1950 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
He was a retired engineer of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and was a native of Gates County, N.C. He was the son of the late James A. Sparkman and Mrs. Emma Costen Sparkman.
Mr. Sparkman was the husband of the late Mrs. Nevie Parker Sparkman and had lived in this seciton for 70 years.
Surviving are two sons, Alton P. Sparkman, of Lynchburg; and Norwood Sparkman of Portsmouth; a granddaugther, Mrs. Ernest Morgan, of Portsmouth; a grandson, Staff Sgt. Carroll Cassell, Jr. United States Army, stationed in Japan; and a sister, Mrs. H. V. Pearsons, of Windsor.
He was a charter member of the Park View Baptist Church.
The body was taken to Snellings Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, in Park View Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church until the hour of the funeral.

James E. Sparkman, 85, former resident of Linden Avenue, who died Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at 128 North Armstrong Street, was buried yesterday in Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. at Park View Baptist Church by the Rev. W. W. Hutchins, pastor of Park View Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were A. V. Grimes, D. C. Glover, W. G. Stoakes, W. T. L. Shepherd, Dudley S. Rawles, and R. C. Dempsey.
