7. Character sketch 198, 4 Apr 1899 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
4 April 1899--Character Sketch--Col. James Gregory Hodges
Mr. Editor: This gallant officer was the son of one of Portsmouth's most highly respected citizens, Gen. John Hodges, a former postmaster of that city and one of the leading citizens. The subject of this sketch, I believe, first saw the light of day beneath the roof of the paternal mansion on the northwest corner of Middle and North streets. Col. Hodges in early life married Miss Sallie Wilson, the accomplished daughter of Mr. Wm. H. Wilson, owner of the building known as the Macon House, and one of the solid citizens of the city.
His military training was acquired at the Military Academy under instructors of marked ability, and from here he entered the University of Virginia, where in due time he graduated medicine with high honors. He returned home and at once entered upon the practice of his profession, which he pursued diligently and successfully. But his military knowledge was recognized, and he was elected to and accepted the capaincy of the Marion Rifles, one of the companies that composed the Third Virginia Regiment; untiil promotion to major relieved him of that command. His advancement continued until he bore a colonel's commission, commanding the Third Virginia Regiment, which commission he held at the time the State called her sons to her defense, and as such was mustered into the service of his State.
His command of this regiment, however, after being mustered into service, was of short duration, and having been superseded by Col. R. A. Pryor, he was assigned to the command of the Fourteenth Virginia regiment, the duites of which he gallantly discharged until the fatal charge at Gettysburg, and while nobly leading his command he fell to rise no more, and today, in an unknown grave, this hero sleeps. It was my pleasure to have been associated with him in his early military training and in his subsequent military career, by reason of relations existing as his adjutant.
He had ambition, but it was of that laudable character, which urged him to excel in whatever he engaged, and had he lived his gallantry would have met reward in a brigadier's commission. It is a pleasure to testify to the worth of this soldier, for there are none that knew him better than the writer in the daily walks of life, whether found in civilians garb or in the honorable discharge of his military duties, he was the same courteous, modest, gentleman in peace as he was courageous in danger.
