1. Bio 1676, of William Dickson in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
In 1811 he was executor of his father Henry's will and he joined in a petition to open a bank in the town. In 1817 there is an advertisement for the sale of ships at "Dickson's Wharf" in Gosport. In 1821 he was on the committee to raise money for relief of those whose houses were lost in the disastrous fire in Portsmouth which burned 60 houses. He died at his residence in Gosport after "a long pulmonary illness." In the year of his death he paid $30 for the rent of pew number 5 in the church.

William owned a whole block in Gosport with four brick warehouses, his residence and a wharf from which: " I have seen more rum, sugar and molasses landed in one day...than you can see in the port now in six months. The whole river was lined with vessels trading to and from foreign ports."

A meeting of the citizens of the Town of Portsmouth, on Wednesday the 8th day of May, 1811, for the purpose of petitioning for a bank in said town; Jesse Nicholson being called to the chair, and Mordecai Cooke being appointed secretary, the following resolutions were submitted and uninimously adopted:
Resolved: That much public good and individual benefit would result from the establishment of a bank in the town of Portsmouth, which this meeting have the strongest assurances will go into immediate operation if permitted by law.
Resolved: That this meeting entertains entire confidence in the justice and impartiality of the Legislature in granting and encouraging institutions of this nature, the general benefits whereof in a Republican Government, like ours, should be extensively diffused, and not limited to a few towns only.
Resolved: That a petition be presented the next General Assembly, praying that a bank may be established in said town with a capital of $250,000, and that Jesse Nicholson, James S. Mathews, George W. Maupin, James Young, Mordecai Cooke, Lawrence Mansfield, John Foster, William Wilson Jun., William Dickson, Swepson Whitehead, Tapley Webb and Holt Wilson, be requested to prepare the same.
Resolved: That the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the president and secretary, and published in the Norfolk Gazettes.

I, William Dickson of Gosport do hereby declare my last will and testament, intending thereby to despose of all my estate real & personal & revoke & annul all prior testimentary dispositions I desire and bequeath to my wife Angelina Mallory Dickson one third of all my real estate situate in the town of Norfolk and in Gosport in the County of Norfolk, to be held by her for life, & I give to her in fee simple, the slaves, Billy, Betty, Titus & big Jacob all my household and kitchen furniture plaste, linen, liquors, provisions and every thing laid in for the use of my family which slaves & personal property, are to be at her absolute & incumbrance dispose without amount to any person, but I give it under the belief that at her death, she will dispose of such as may remain of it among the issue of her marriage by me, this provision together with that to be hereafter made for her, out of the residue of my personal estate is intended as lien, and full satisfaction of her legal claims as my widow in my real and personal estate I give to my daughter Elizabeth my piano forte, I bequeath to my children by my first marriage, three plated urns & a french clock to be found amongst my household furniture I direct that interest be paid to my sister Gibson on the debt I owe her, I give one hundred & fifty dollars to my nephew Adias Dickson, son of Henry, to be paid out by my exectors for schooling, maintenance or clothing, I give and devise in fee simple to my daughter Mary Wilson who is now of full age, one fourth of my real estate lands and tenements in Gosport and of the profits thereof subject to the devise, to my wife, that is to say of the remaining two thirds and given to her & of the revision in that third after her death, all the rest of my estate real personal & mixed wheresoever lying and in whatever it may consist, I give devise and bequeath to my said wife, to my brother Thomas Dickson, & to my friend John Southgate of Norfolk during their joint life & to the survivors & the heirs exectors & administrators of such servivor upon the following trusts, as to the personal estate in trust, & to satisfy and pay all my just debts 2 ? to pay over and ? to said wife in absolute fee simple, one third of all my personal & mixed estate remaining after the payment of my debts, and to divide the remaining two third of my said personal equally among all my children to wit, my daughter Mary Wilson wife of Mark Wilson & Elizabeth Dickson, Richard Dicskon & William Dickson the offspring of my first marriage and my children Mallory Todd Dickson, Annie Robinson Dickson, Louisa ? The foregoing last will and testament of William Dickson deceased was proved by the oaths of Henry Tabb and John Dickson two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. On the motion of John Southgate & Thomas Dickson the executors named in the said will do made oath that they are permitted to qualify without giving ??? of the said will it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court, that the testator has left an able estate more than sufficient to pay all his debts, whereupon the said Thomas Dickson and John Southgateseverally acted into and acknowledgedbonds in the penalty of one hundrednad sixty thousand dollars each with condition according to law, thereupon certificate of the probate of the said will is granted them in due form, and on the motion of Angelina Mallory Dickson, the executrix named in the said will, leave is reserved for her to join in the probate of the same at a future day if she pleases.

It is our melancholy duty to announce the removal to another and better world, of one of our most worthy and respected fellow citizens, William Dickson, Esq'r in the 51st year of his age. He took a final leave of this sublinary scene, and its endearments on Saturday evening last, at his residence in Gosport, after a protracted illness of a pulmonary disease, from which he had in vain sought relief, the past summer, by a change of climate, and by the aid of the best medical skill in the country......(eulogy)
