Captain John H. Myer's Company, Co. E., Sixth Va. Regiment36. Miliary Service 1342, 2 lieutenant, Co. E., 6 Virginia Infantry, 1861 in Virginia
This company had a short life and was the victim of too strict discipline. It was organized in Portsouth immediately after the burning of the Navy Yard by Captain Myers, who was an Orderly Sergeant in the Battalion of Marines stationed in the Navy Yard, but being a Virginian and unwilling to fight against his State, he managed to make his escape when Commodore McCauley moved off with the Pawnee and Cumberland, and remained behind. He was an excellent drill master and had no difficulty in raising a company of which he was elected Captain. It was regularly mustered into the Confederate service and was assigned to the 6th Virginia Regiment as Company E. The regiment was then under command of Colonel William Mahone. The officers were:
Captain--John H. Myers
First Lieutenant, Virginius C. Cooke; Second Lieutenant, V.O. Cassell
First Sergeant, B. J. Accinelly; Second Sergeant, Enos Murphy; Third Sergeant, Richard D. Brown; Fourth Sergeant, Chas. Syer.
The company was on duty with the regiment in the entrenched camp between Norfolk and Seawell's Point, but Captain Myers undertook to carry out with the volunteers the same methods which he had been accustomed to put into operation in the marine corps in the Navy, and every infraction of the rules, however slight, or any inattention to dress or parade or drill was visited by the severest punishment in his power to inflict. If a man was absent from a roll call Captain Myers would report him as a deserter and wanted to offer a reward for his arrest and return to camp, said reward to be deducted from his pay. Matters in the company became so unbearable that nearly every man in it applied for transfers to other commands, and as the best solution of the dilemma the Colonel recommended that the company be disbanded. Both of the Lieutenants had resigned and the men were trying to get out. The last report of the company is a curiosity in its way. It was dated September 1st, 1861, and twenty-two men who were merely absent from roll call were reported as deserters, with a recommendation that all of their pay be taken from them. Others were reported for other offences, with the recommendation that one month's pay be deducted from them, and scarcely a man in the whole list had met the entire approval of the Captain. This report was made up after the receipt of the order disbanding the company, and the summary was as follows:
Transferred to Company D: 11 men
Transferred to Company C: 1 men
Appointed hospital steward: 1 men
Mustered out, 1 officer and 20 men: 20 men
Resigned, 2 officers
Mustered out, unwilling to remain in service: 6 men
Died, 1: discharged for disability, 7: 8 men
Deserted: 22 men
Total: 3 officers and 69 men
Nearly all of the men enlisted in other companies and made good soldiers. It was unfortunate that the Captain could not appreciate the difference between a company newly organized of men who had been used to the widest liberty in all of their movements ad who needed to be brought under a state of discipline by patient and persistent efforts and a company of regulars on shipboard. There was abundant material for a good company, but it was badly managed. Below will be found a complete roll of the company from the date of its organization, in April 1861, to its disbandment, September 1st, 1861. One private, Elijah Creekmore, died.

40. Miliary Service 1345, captain of Co. D, 61st Va. Regiment, 10 Mar 1862 in Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., Virginia
Jackson Light Infantry, Company D, Sixty-First Virginia Regiment41. Military, Capt. of Co. D, 61st Virginia Infantry, Mar 1862-Jun 1864 in Norfolk Co., Virginia
This company was organized in the City Hall, Portsmouth, on the 10th of March, 1862, and elected officers as follows;
Captain: V.O. Cassell
First Lieutenant: John Powers; 2d Lieutenant: Virginius A. Haynes; 3d lieutenant: Alex B. Butt
First Sergeant: J. J. Bilisoly
The original idea when the company was orgainzed was to make it a heavy artillery company for duty in a regiment which was being organized for special services in the fortifications around the harbor, but it was furnished with muskets, and the evacuation of Portsmouth by the Confederates before the organization of the regiment was completed did away with its usefulness as heavy artillerists. owing to the short period of time which elaspsed between the organization of the company and the evacuation of Portsmouth, it has a very uneventful history independent of the general history of the regiment of which it formed a part. It was on duty at the entrenced camp south of Portsmouth known as the Forrest entrenchments, after Commodore Forrest, commanding the Navy Yard, when the city was evacuated. It was then moved to Petersburg, quartered for two or three days in that city, and then moved into camp on Dunn's Hill. It was with the regiment (the 61st Virginia) as Company D when it was ordered to the Rapidan, in the summer of 1862, and participated in all of the battlews in which the regiment was engaged, a full list of which we be seen in the sketch of the regiment itself.
After the 61st regiment became a part of Mahone's Brigade, Lieutenant Alex B. Butt was appointed Adjutant of the 41st Virginia Regiment of the same brigade, and was mortally wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville and died in a hospital. Captain V. O. Cassell lost a leg in the same battle and was incapacitated for further service and retired. This promoted Lieutenant John Powers to Captain, and 2d Lieutenant Haynes to 1st Lieutenant. Orderly Sergeant Julius J. Bilisoly was promoted to 2d Lieutenant. Those officers served throughout the war with the command. The company was in several small engagements or skirmishes with theenemy in 1862, and was in line of battle at Fredericksburg December 13th, 1862, and under a heavy artillery fire, but was not actively engaged, as the enemy's attack was made upon another portion of the Confederate lines to the right of the position held by them. Chancellorsville was the first battle of any magnitude in which it was engaged. In this battle Privated J. Wiley Howard lost a leg and Private Joseph Barrett was wounded. It had two men killed at the Crater fight--John Sheppard and John Wood--and surrendered at Appomattox April 9th, 1865, with one Lieutenant, one Ordnance Sergeant and six privates, all that was left for duty of upwards of sixty men who left Portsmouth with the company on the 10th of May 1862. More than one fourth were killed or died, and of the remainder some were wounded and some fell into the hands of the enemy and were not exchanged. The following is a list of the members of the company who left Portsmouth with it. The list of casualties opposite the names of the men has been prepared from memory, and some may have been omitted who were recipients of wounds, but it is probable that all who were killed or died have been reported properly:
Captain V.O. Cassell, lost leg at Chancellorsville, May 3d, 1863, and retired.

The application and evidence referred to is as follows, to wit:

That my left knee cap was shattered by a minnie ball, while in command of my said Company, in the battle of Chancellorsville on the 1st day of May 1863. That my leg was amputated at the lower third of the thigh, in consequence of said wound, the same day by Doctor Herbert M. Nash, surgeon of the regiment now resident at Norfolk Virginia and Doctor Claiborne the Brigade Surgeon, now residing at Petersburg, Virginia. The said leg was again amputated higher up that is to say at the second third at Mitchell's station Culpepper County, Virginia, to which place your applicant was sent by the Confederate Authorities from Officer's Hospital No. 4, at Richmond, Virginia, to obtain benefit of County food and air, he having while at said Hospital at Richmond, Va. ruptured the phemeral artery and bled nearly to death before it could be ligated. The said second amputation was made by said Herbert M. Nash surgeon as aforesaid. Your applicant is totally disabled from manual labor and has had to go on crutches ever since receiving said last wound as aforesaid and recovery therefrom and totally unable to wear an artificial leg.
Your petitioner received $60 commutation from this state about the year 1872, under the act of the General Assembly of Va. approved March 25, 1872, Acts 1871-2, Chap. 346, entitled "An Act to amend and re enact the first section of an act approved Nov. 1, 1879 entitled an act to provide artificial legs for citizens of the commonwealth who lost their legs during the late war". We regret to record the death of our well-known fellow citizen, Captain V. O. Cassell, head of the legal firm of V. O. Cassell & Son, and one of the oldest members of the Bar of this section. Captain Cassell had been in feeble health for a long time and occasionally he suffered considerably from the wounds he received in the late war. A short while ago he fell and broke his arm, since which time he has continued feeble, and later seriously ill, succumbing to the great struggle with death Tuesday night last, full of honors and with a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his lose.
During the war he was a gallant soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia in command. He was captain of Company B, 61st Virginia Regimetn, Mahone's Brigade, and was wounded at the first day's fight at Chancellorsville and lost a leg in the service. Returning to Portsmouth after the war he resumed the practice of the law, and for ten years he was Commonwealth's Attorney for Norfolk County. For a number years before the war he was clerk of the City Council, and after the war was re-elected to the same position and held it for several terms. When Stonewall Camp, Confederate Beterans, was organized he was the first commander of the camp, but owing to his health only served one term.
Deceased was sixty-four years of age. He leaves a wife and several children, prominent amoung whom are City Surveyor Virginius Cassell, Mr. Norman Cassell and Mr. Charles E. Cassell, of the firm of Cassell & Cassell, the architects of this city and Norfolk. Highly social and pleasant Captain Cassell had many friends and was generally respected and esteemed in the community. His funeral will take place this afternoon, at 4 o'clock, from Trinity Church. The funeral of Captain V. O. Cassell took place yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Trinity P. E. Church. The services were conducted by Rev. F. F. Reese, a former pastor. The remains were followed to the grave by a number of relatives and friends of the deceased also a detachment of Stonewall Camp, Confederate Veterans. Action of the Bar
The members of the Bar of Portsmouth and Norfolk met at the Courthouse today at 11 o'clock, to take action on the death of Captain V. O. Cassell, one of the oldest attorneys of the city.
Judge A. S. Watts was called to the chair, and Mr. James S. Kerr, of Norfolk, was elected Secretary.
The Chairman called the meeting to order and stated that it had been called, as was the custom of the Bar, to pay the last sad tribute of respect to a departed member, Captain V. O. Cassell. Judge Watts spoke very feelingly of the deceased and announced that the Chair was ready to hear from the members.
On motion of Judge O. W. Murdaugh, a committee of five was appointed on resolutions. The chair appointed Judge Murdaugh, Judge George D. Parker, Colonel W. H. Stewart, Mr. John W. Happer and mr. A. W. Warner. The committee retired and after consultation submitted the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted.
Whereas, we the members of the Bar of the cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk and county of Norfolk, have heard with sincere sorrow of the death of our late associate and friend, Captain V. O. Cassell, we deem it a duty which we owe alike to ourselves and to the memory of the dead, to publicly express our feeling on this mournful visitation.
We ever recognized in him those sterling qualities which adorn the character of a lawyer and a gentleman, and which placed him, while living, amoung the most respected and beloved of our profession; and to him, now that he is no more, all honor is due. If not in the fullness od years, he has, in the ripeness of an autumn of faithful and honorable service, to his State, to his country and to his city, passed away, leaving to us who survive the memory of his unstained life, of his pure and fervent patriotism, of his stern integrity, of his kind and benignant temper, and of his unmixed devotion to the cause he espoused, and to the welfare of his State, in whose service he so faithfully served, and so severely suffered. He died as he lived, honored and respected; and will ever by remembered as the gallant soldier, the faithful lawyer, and the honest man. And what more can be said?"
And now, as a feeble token of the (unreadable) we do hereby adopt the following resolutions:
Resolved, That in the death of our departed associate, we recognize a common and heavy loss, not only to his family, but to the community, and in deeply deploring the mournful event which has taken him from our midst, feel that we have been deprived of a valuable member of the Bar; and as individuals of a much esteemed friend,
Resolved, That we sincerely sympathnize with the widow and family of the deceased in their sad and sorrowful bereavement,
Resolved, That in testimony of our respect for his memory, we will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days, and as a further mark of respect to the deceased, we attend his funeral in a body.
Resolved, That a copy of the proceedings of the meeting be presented the chairman by the judge of the Court of Hustings for the city of Portsmouth, Norfolk county and city of Norfolk, with the request that the same be entered on the records of their respective courts, and that a copy of the same be sent to the widow and family of the deceased.
Judge L. R. Watts and Judge C. W. Murdaugh spoke of the life and character of the deceased in terms of highest praise and feeling, and the meeting then adjourned.
