Last Will and Testament of James E. Manning
I, James E. Manning of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made.
First: I desire all my just debts to be paid as soon after my decease as may conveniently be done.
Second: I bequeath unto my daughter James Elizabeth Manning the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars ($250.00)
Third: I devise and bequeath unto my daughter Edna Almeda Manning all the residue of my estate of every kind and wheresoever located.
Fourth: I nominate and appoint as Executor of this my last will and testament and as guardian of my said daughter Edna Almeda Manning Joseph J. France of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia. Done at Portsmouth, Virginia, this ninth day of March A. D. nineteen hundred and seventeen and in testimony whereof I hereto set my signature and seal.

At the Court of Hustings for the City of Portsmouth held on the 3rd day of May, 1917: The last will and testament of James E. Manning, late of this City, deceased, was this day presented to the Court by Joseph J. France, the executor therein named, and fully proved by the oaths of A. Aug. Bilisoly and J. M. Broughton, subscribing witnesses thereto, and was thereupon ordered to be recorded; and on the motion of Joseph J. France, the only executor named in the said will, who made oath as the law directs, and entered into a bond in the penalty of six thousand dollars, conditioned according to law, with the Maryland Casualty Company, Incorporated, his surety therein, (which bond being acknowledged by the obligors therein, is ordered to be recorded,) certificate is granted the said Joseph J. France for obtaining a probat of the said will, in due fore; and thereupon the said Joseph J. France, executor as aforesaid, filed the list required by law containing the names and so far as possible the ages and addresses of the heirs of the said James E. Manning, deceased, verified by the affidavit of the said Joseph J. France that the said list is believed by him to be true.

James E. Manning, of this city, died yesterday morning in Assawoman, Va., where he was visiting with his family. He was a victim of pneumonia, which he contracted when he went to Assawoman a few days ago.9. Funeral notice 2573, 8 Jan 1919 in Norfolk, Norfolk (city), Virginia, USA
Mr. Manning was 31 years old and lived at 318 Hatton Street, this city. For many years he had been identified with the local drug trade, and recently acquited an interest in a drug store in Port Norfolk, and was also identified with the operation of a pharmacy in Scottsville. He was popular with a large circle of acquaintances.
He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Caroline Knock Manning, and two children, James Edward Manning, Jr. and Ruth Manning. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Carrie E. Manning; a sister, Mrs. t. T. Taylor, and four brothers, J. C., H. E., W. A., and K. G. Manning.
The body will be brought to this city this morning over the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk railroad and will be conveyed to the residence of the mother of the deceased, 7 Cooke Street, where the funeral service will take place at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

James E. Manning---The funeral of James E. Manning, who died on Monday, was held at the home of his mother, Mrs. Carrie E. Manning, 7 North Cooke Street, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The Rev. R. M. Chandler, pastor of the Park View M. E. Church, officiated, assisted by the rev. W. E. Abernathy, pastor of central M. E. Church, and the interment was made in Oak Grove Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Maywood O. Lawrence, Frank D. Lawrence, W. L. Allen, W. C. Meapine, Edward Allen, Harry Davis, Henry H. Cooke, and R. C. Barclay.11. During the service a solo, "Does Jesus Care?" was admirably sung by Mr. W. W. Moore. There were anmerous beautiful floral tokens, among which was a large wreath of carnations and sweet peas from Shop No. 1E in the navy yard, and a large wreath of carnations and roses from the issuing department. There was also a large wreath of carnations and sweet peas from the inspectors of the navy yard.
