Portsmouth--William Hazzard Wigg Cassell, 78, of 108 London St., former judge of Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, died Thursday at 11 a.m. in a nursing home.
A native of Portsmouth, Judge Cassell was a son of Norman Cassell and Mrs. Virginia Stevens Wigg Cassell. He never married.
He received his elementary education at the old Norfolk Academy on Bank Street and was a graduate of the University of Virginia and its Law School.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a Navy veteran of World War 1. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for Portsmouth in the 1950s.
He was the assistant of Judge William H. Oast, judge of the Portsmouth Municipal Court, from 1943 to 1954. Upon Judge Oast's death he was appointed in his place. The Municipal Court at that time embraced the jurisdiction of the juvenile and domestic relations activities of the Portsmouth city government.
Judge Cassell was a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and a past post commander of American Legion Post 7 of Portsmouth.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Chalres Sharp Wilcox Sr.; two nephews, Charles Sharp Wilcox Jr., and Norman Cassell Wilcox; and a niece, Mrs. Daniel L. Bailey, all of Norfolk.
The body was taken to Brennan Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at noon in Cedar Grove Cemetery by the Rev. C. Charles Vache of Trinity Episcopal Church.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.
