5. Obituary 2323, struck by train, 25 Oct 1922 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
School Teacher Struck by Train
Miss Pauline Grace Johns, of this city, Killed at Bowers Hill--Will Be Buried Here Tomorrow
Miss Pauline Grace Johns, 19 years old, eldest daughter of James R. and Mrs. Grace F. Johns, of 953 North street, Park View, was struck by a Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger train at Bower's Hill at 8:40 o'clock yesterday morning and was instantly killed. Miss Johns was a teacher in the public school at Bower's Hill and was on her way from her boarding place, in the home of C. S. Warren to the school, when she was killed.
Justice Duke conducted an inquest in his office at 8 o'clock last night. A verdict that Miss Johns came to her death by being struck by a Seaboard Air Line Railway train on a public crossing at Bower's Hill was returned.
Advised Not To Cross--From what could be learned reguarding the accident, Miss Johns was walking from the Warren home, on the North side of the Seaboard tracks, and was apparently hurrying to join persons on the south side of the tracks. It was stated that she was warned by a youth that she could not cross the tracks before the train, which was approaching, reached the crossing.
She was hurled aside by the locomotive as it passed through Bower's Hill without stopping. When witnesses of the accident reached her, she was dead.
Apparently the crew of the locomotive did not see the accident for the train continued on to the city. Part of Miss Johns' lunch, which she carried with her, was strewn on the locomotive when it reached the city.
Funeral Service Tomorrow--The body was brought to the city and conveyed to the funeral apartments of Flynn and O'Connor, 316 Court street, where it will remain until tomorrow afternoon, when it will be conveyed to Oak Grove Cemetery, where funeral service will be conducted at the grave at 4 o'clock. Besides her parents, Miss Johns is survived by two sisters, Misses Frances Lee and Jennie May Johns, and a brother, James Heeley Johns, as well as numerous other relatives.
She was a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School, and was regarded by school officials as a particularly bright student while in schools and a competent teacher. Superintendent Hunt said yesterday that he had never seen a person of her age, more admirable in the art of English.
6. Funeral 2324, buried at Oak Grove cemetery, 26 Oct 1922 in Portsmouth, Portsmouth (city), Virginia, USA
Miss Pauline Grace Johns, daughter of James R. and Mrs. Grace F. Johns, who was killed last Tuesday morning when she was struck by a Seaboard Air Line Railway train at Bower's Hill, was buried yesterday afternoon in Oak Grove Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted at the grave. Rev. Charles H. Holmead, rector, of Trinity Episcopal church, officiating. There was an immense throng in attendance, including not only many friends of the young lady in this city, but the pupils she taught in the Bower's Hill school, and the patrons of that institution.
One of the tributes of Miss John's former pupils was when they filed past the coffin after it has been lowered into the grave, and each dropped a white chrysanthemum on it.
There was a profusion of floral tokens sent by friends, including a standing wreath of roses and asters from the Campostella Heights school; a floral tribute from Miss McNulty's class in the Briggs school, of this city; a wreath from the children of the Bower's Hill school, and also a design from the parents of children in attendance at that school. There were also numerous individual tributes of esteem.
The pallbearers were as follows: H. F. Butt, III, Philip Lee, Walter Hinton, Straghan Herndon, Robert and Elsworth Berryman and Earl Smith.
