17 April 1894---The Shooting Case Saturday Night
We mentioned in our last issue about Constable J. T. Hodges, of the county, who arrested a colored man named Abe Williams on the corner of Chestnut and Griffin streets, on a charge of disorderly conduct. Williams resisted arrest, and according to the testimony of witnesses for the defense, struck the constable, after dragging him from the county to the city side of the street, and when the constable threatened to shoot, Williams put his hand behind him as if to draw a weapon and told the officer to shoot; that he (Williams) had him (Hodges) where he wanted him--on the city side, and advanced on the officer, Hodges drew his pistol and fired two shots into Williams, who then turned and went home. On reaching the house he fell in the floor from his wounds. Constable Hodges surrended himself to Justice Rutter, and was afterwards arrested by the city police and carried to the station house.
Williams is a sailor in the United State Navy and a powerful man, having quite a reputation as a local prize fighter. The Naval Hospital authorities were communicated with, and about 2 o'clock Sunday morning he was carried to the institution in the ambulance. Dr. Penrose, the medical director, and his assistants made an examination and found that six of the intestines had been pierced by a ball, and that another ball had entered the shoulder and ranged downward.
Yesterday Williams was alive and doing as well as could be expected, but his condition is critcal.
In the Mayor's Court yesterday Constable Hodges was represented by Captain John W. Happer and Mr. Charles H. Costen. The Mayor, after hearing the evidence, discharged the accused, the evidence showing justifiable shooting.
20 April 1894---Died from His Injuries
Abe Williams, the colored man shot by Constable Hodges last Saturday night while resisting arrest, died at the Naval Hospital, Wednesday night from the effects of his wounds. The city authorities were notified of the death and the coroner was notified, but as Hodges was acquitted no other action will be taken.
